Mechanical Engineer

Engineering

Mediumoffice5 years to qualify

Mechanical engineers deal with anything that moves, heats, cools or carries load: engines, pumps, turbines, compressors, conveyor belts, air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, and production machinery. The work mixes design on paper and CAD software with time on the shop floor β€” inspecting equipment, diagnosing why a machine keeps failing, planning maintenance schedules and supervising technicians during repairs or installation. In Nigeria, mechanical engineers work in oil and gas and servicing companies, in manufacturing plants (cement, breweries, food and beverage, plastics), in power generation and distribution, in aviation and automotive maintenance, in construction firms handling HVAC and building services, and in agencies and consultancies. Many also run their own workshops or fabrication and generator-servicing businesses. It suits students who enjoy Physics and Mathematics, like to know how things work, and do not mind getting hands dirty in a plant or workshop rather than sitting at a desk all day.

Career pathway

1

Science subjects at SSCE

At SSCE level

Five credits including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, usually plus one other science subject such as Further Mathematics, Biology or Technical Drawing.

2

UTME and admission into Mechanical Engineering

Sit JAMB UTME with English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, then pass post-UTME screening. Direct Entry into 200 level is possible with A-levels, ND or IJMB.

3

B.Eng/B.Tech Mechanical Engineering

5 years

Five years in a Nigerian university covering thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, machine design, manufacturing and control, with workshop practice and a final-year project. Check that the programme is NUC accredited and recognised by COREN.

4

SIWES industrial attachment

6 months (within the degree)

Built into the degree, usually in 400 level. You work in a factory, workshop or servicing company and see real machines. Treat it as your first job interview β€” many students are retained by the company where they did SIWES.

5

NYSC

1 year

National Youth Service after graduation. Try to be posted to an engineering firm, manufacturing plant or agency so the year counts as experience.

6

Alternative route: ND then HND in Mechanical Engineering

About 4 years plus industrial training

Polytechnic route: National Diploma (2 years), then one year industrial training, then Higher National Diploma (2 years). HND holders work widely as engineers and technologists in industry and can later convert or do a top-up/Master's.

7

COREN registration

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) registers engineers, and registration requires a period of supervised post-graduation experience before you can be registered as a Registered Engineer. Registration is needed to take professional responsibility for engineering work and to sign off designs, and employers increasingly ask for it; confirm the current experience requirement and fees directly with COREN or the NSE, as these change.

Common challenges

Theory-heavy degree, limited practical equipment

Difficult

Many Nigerian engineering departments have outdated or non-functional laboratory and workshop equipment, so students graduate able to solve equations but with little hands-on experience of real machines.

How to handle: Create your own practical exposure: take SIWES seriously and pick a place where you will touch equipment rather than file papers, spend holidays with a local generator, AC or auto workshop even informally, and learn a CAD package such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks and basic SolidWorks/ANSYS simulation on your own using free tutorials. An employer will choose the graduate who has stripped and reassembled a pump.

Strikes and extended time to graduate

Moderate

ASUU strikes and session disruptions can stretch a five-year programme well beyond five years in federal and state universities.

How to handle: Plan to use strike periods, not lose them: short courses, welding or fabrication skills, CAD certification, online courses, or attachment to a workshop. Keep your academic materials with you so you can read ahead. If your family can afford it, a private or polytechnic option may be steadier, but do not take on debt for it.

Mathematics and Physics load

Moderate

Thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and machine design are mathematically heavy, and students who entered with weak Mathematics often struggle and carry over courses.

How to handle: Fix your Mathematics and Physics now, in SS1-SS3, rather than hoping university will be different. Offer Further Mathematics if your school provides it. At university, form a small study group and work past questions weekly instead of reading only before exams.

Jobs are concentrated and competitive

Difficult

The best-paying mechanical engineering jobs are in oil and gas and large manufacturing, concentrated in Lagos, Port Harcourt and a few industrial clusters, and they receive thousands of applications.

How to handle: Broaden what you count as a career: maintenance in breweries and food plants, HVAC and building services, power generation, agricultural machinery, and workshop ownership all need mechanical engineers across the country. Build a specific marketable skill β€” welding and fabrication inspection, HVAC design, maintenance planning, CAD β€” and start applying to graduate trainee schemes early in final year. Join NSE as a student member for the networking.
